Almost every high-performance vehicle has this type of engine layout and it is quite popular. The cylinder banks, or the chambers in which pistons move, are arranged in such a way that, when viewed from the front, they form a V shape.

This engine layout is distinguished from other engines by the fact that it can accommodate more cylinders in a smaller space. As a result, more power is produced while maintaining the aesthetics of the car. Vibrations are more likely to occur in a V Engine than a straight engine, and they are more complicated in their design, therefore, more expensive to repair. A layout like this produces more power, since all pistons reach their power stroke at a shorter time interval.

A V-engine layout is almost always used by high performance automakers such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Mercedes Benz, due to its compact size and high power output capability.

Types of Engine Cylinders

Traditionally, the number of cylinders in a vehicle determined its power and performance. Due to high-tech fuel injection systems and other efficient engine components, even smaller engines are capable of delivering comparable performance to larger engines today. Additionally, cylinder configuration and engine layout affect an engine’s fuel efficiency, its sound and its power output.
